Excel expert David Ringstrom, CPA, shares helpful tweaks you can use with the venerable VLOOKUP function. In this invaluable presentation, he explains alternatives to VLOOKUP, including the INDEX and MATCH, SUMIF, SUMIFS, SUMPRODUCT, IFNA, IFERROR, ISERROR and OFFSET functions.

Lookup formulas are far superior to manually searching for specific data elements in a spreadsheet. Many users rely on VLOOKUP to return data from other locations in a worksheet, but because using VLOOKUP isn’t always the most efficient approach, David explains alternatives. David demonstrates every technique at least twice: first, on a PowerPoint slide with numbered steps, and second, in Excel 2016.

He draws to your attention any differences in Excel 2013, 2010 or 2007 during the presentation as well as in his detailed handouts. David also provides an Excel workbook that includes most of the examples he uses during the webcast.

After attending the webcast, participants will be equipped to:
  • Utilize Excel lookup functions to become more efficient in Excel
  • Use the IFERROR function to display something other than an #N/A error value when VLOOKUP can’t find a match
  • Perform dual lookups, allowing you to look across columns and down rows to cross-reference data you need
  • Use the MATCH function to find the position of an item on a list
  • View two worksheets from within the same workbook at the same time
  • Use Excel’s OFFSET function to dynamically reference data from one or more accounting periods
  • Future-proof VLOOKUP by using Excel’s Table feature versus referencing static ranges
  • Comparing and contrasting IFNA, IFERROR and ISERROR functions and learning which versions of Excel support these worksheet functions
  • Discovering how to use wildcards and multiple criteria within lookup formulas
  • Improving the integrity of spreadsheets with Excel’s VLOOKUP function
  • Learning about the IFNA function available in Excel 2013 and later
  • Learning how VLOOKUP stops looking after it finds an initial match within a list
  • Learning why the INDEX and MATCH combination often is superior to VLOOKUP or HLOOKUP
  • Performing dual lookups, which allow you to look across columns and down rows to cross-reference the data you need
  • Understanding how the HLOOKUP function enables you to perform horizontal matches
  • Seeing how to view two worksheets from within the same workbook at the same time
  • Discovering what types of user actions can trigger #REF! errors
  • Using the MATCH function to find the position of an item on a list
  • Applying the SUMIF function to summarize data based on a single criterion
