Overview of the webinar

Have you listen to the news lately? It seems as if everyday, there is an action shooter incident in the United States either at a educational institution or place of employement.
Some interesting facts about active shooter incidents: Of 160 active shooter incidents in the United States between 2000 and 2013, over 80 percent (132) occurred at work, according to the FBI’s first study of the subject.
The agency defined an active shooter incident as when an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area through the use of firearms. In most cases, there is no pattern or method to their selection of victims. Active shooter situations are unpredictable and evolve quickly. Typically, the immediate deployment of law enforcement is required to stop the shooting and mitigate harm to victims. Because active shooter situations are often over within 10 to 15 minutes--before law enforcement arrives on the scene--individuals must be prepared both mentally and physically to deal with an active shooter situation. The following resources provide information of preparing for such an incident and what to do if confronted with an active shooter.
The study found that 1,043 people were either killed or wounded in all 160 incidents, excluding the shooters. There was an average of 6.4 incidents per year from 2000-06, but the rate increased to 16.4 incidents per year from 2007-13. The incidents occurred in 40 states and in Washington, D.C.
This webinar will focus on the profile of a potential active shooter, how to prepare and what precautions to take during such an event.
